Why I have been travelling to Mallorca?
Travelling to Mallorca can be quite cheap and easy compared to other destinations. My goal was to go somewhere where it’s warm and the travel hours are short. If I just have 4 days I always try to travel as convenient as possible. Mallorca is known for perfect cycling opportunities, that was a reason for why I chose the balearic island.
The ever-popular star of the Mediterranean, Mallorca has a sunny personality thanks to its ravishing beaches, azure views, remote mountains and soulful hill towns.Lonely Planet
If I read articles online about Mallorca it just has to be perfect. The biggest island of the Balearic Islands, wonderful beaches, postcard scenery not to forget. The Mediterranean as its best, apparently. I knew that Mallorca has wonderful places to relax, swim and enjoy the sun.
Mallorca, the perfect cycling destination?
Many cycling teams, individuals and passionate cyclists travel to Mallorca to follow their sports. Although I had some questions in mind:
- Should I bring my own bike or rent it?
- Where is best to stay when renting a bike?
- What are the best routes?
I had troubles to find useful insights about cycling, while searching online. I received some tips from friends who have been there before, although I had some troubles to commit. One of my issues I had, I was not clear about either staying in one place for the entire trip or move around and finding a company who provides a service to travel my luggage. I was doubting, which routes are the right ones for me and I was not sure about realistic prices.
Those where all questions and doubts I had before travelling to Mallorca. I wanted to have an easy going trip without any complications.
To sum up way too much thinking, which I don’t like. I am very spontaneous, when it comes to travelling, but this time I thought maybe it would be better to travel with a plan. 😀
I ended up not having one. So how did it all go?
Why cycling is the perfect pre winter season workout
I am very much focused on preventing injuries through professional preparation during the summer times. Feeling strong and physical ready is as essential as being mentally fit. Since I have been a professional athlete, cycling has always been part of training methods. I liked the fact that I could cycle outdoors, which I always preferred when working on my physical strength.
Last June I finished an ULTRAMARATHON, which went amazingly good, though I felt that my body needs to have a break from running, so I started cycling precisely. It feels more genuine for my body and the gentle movement is more supportive for my joints. As an ex-professional sports athlete I understand my body deeply which helps to realise when I should stop due to extreme situations, that can be perilous for my health.
Key to my personal success is to listen to my body. I am calm and patient when I feel that my body needs to recover. I accept myself as I am and give rest when needed and push when I feel to do so.
In addition to physical and mental strength I count nutrition as another key element when it comes to injury prevention. Sometimes people forget about the relevance of healthy nutrition. Nutrition is important at least for me as I care about what I eat. To get more insights and tips about my personal food habit, follow this path, here.
Nutrition is essential and every individual has to find its own way of understanding food for itself. Regarding food in sports I found an interesting article, how professional athletes such as Roger Federer or Usain Bolt care about nutrition.
In cycling, food habits differentiate compared to skiing, which I had to learn. Depending on the hours and the length of the tour I plan, I eat differently. On long distance routes, I need to care about what I eat, because it is the worst to be hungry after 100 km. When that happens, I immediately loose performance.
My personal cycling insights when in Mallorca
1. Should I bring my own bike or rent it?
I have been renting a bike, because I thought travelling with my bike is too much of an effort.
Considering points to think off:
- Location of the rental shop
- Quality of the road bikes
I checked out the following options:
I like the idea of Rapha Cycling Club to rend road-bikes all over the world, just with one membership. I was close to sign up, but then I thought it might not be worth for me, as I won’t be able to use the membership by heart. The location of the Rapha Club in Palma is central and the bikes to rent are great. I am sure the coffee there tastes deliciously. This time it was not worth for me to become a member and rent it form there. I might consider it in the future, when they open up more clubs globally.
+ You get amazing bikes and coffee. The location of the store is in Palma Old Town.
– I would say its a little pricy compared to other competitors unless I would use it over the year
- Cyclista + Mallorca Bike Rental
- NANO Bicycles
I finally ended up renting @ Nano Bicycles.
+ Location was just perfect – 2 min away from the hotel; Very friendly staff and the adjustments were done very well.
– Apparently October seems to be super busy for them, which was the reason for why I did not get the bike I was aiming for. I got the cheapest version they had to rent, because the others have been booked in my size already. The road bike was ok. During the day I realised it does not 100 % fit me, which was a bummer. For a rental bike it was definitely great and the price was fair.
The entire rental process went easy and smooth. A place I would rent again, though I would call them to rent the bike I want to ride on.
In general there are tons of different rental opportunities, I would just give it a go. Due to so many bikers, the hotels offer bike rentals, which I honestly would avoid. This article could help to deepen your search about potential bike rentals in Mallorca.
2. Where is best to stay when renting a bike?
I have been considering either travelling around Mallorca by road bike or stay in one place and do day trips.
For Bike Tours around Mallorca, I would suggest to book an organised tour to get your luggage everyday to the place you end up. For this I don’t have any personal feedback, but this article seems to be helpful and offers different services.
My way of stayin!
RENTAL CAR: I rented a car for the entire trip. The fact I had to leave the car every day and night at the Garage Plaza Major, was the reason for why the total renting and parking of the car got super expensive. Although I got the chance to explore the island.
To sum up I would again stay in Palma, when my purpose is to cycle.
3. What are the best routes?
Mallorca offers lots of different cycling routes and for me it was essential that I got to explore the island. I like to cycle, when it is hilly so therefore I decided to go full on and cycle one of the longest routes. Find more details here:
Things to mention:
- The scenery is fantastic!
- Lots of cyclists, motorcyclists and cars are on the streets of Mallorca and honestly lots of them are over their limits
- Too many road user who are too fast and don’t care about others
- On that day I was passing two horrible accidents
- Back from Port de Soller to Palma you have to ride the pass – it is prohibited to cycle through the tunnel
- There are lots of small cyclist restaurants all over the island
- Bring bicycle lock
- In general there are many tourists on the island – incredible
